[ICON2011] Exclusive Interview with Minh Le, Developer of Counter Strike, Before the Opening of ICON2011!
The secretariat of the International Content Creator’s Conference 2011 (ICON2011) to be held from November 8 in Busan BEXCO, Korea, held a written interview with Minh Le, developer of Counter Strike and speaker at a special session.
Known better by his nickname “Gooseman” Minh Le developed the highly popular FPS game “Counter Strike” and joined hands in 2008 with Pix Korea, a Korean game developing company and is now developing a new FPS game, “Tactical Intervention.”
For fans dreaming of becoming the next generation Minh Le, the ICON 2011 secretariat met with him before the opening of the conference on November 8 to listen to his latest activities.
Q. What brought you to work with Pix Korea, a Korean developer?
A friend of mine (in Canada) introduced me to FixKorea CEO and we have a common goal to develop FPS games for not just Korea, but the entire world.
Q. It’s been a long time since you left Valve, but there’s no sequel released yet. Is there any reason for the delay?
I do not work at Valve anymore so I have no idea why there is a delay.
Q. What kind of game is ‘Tactical Intervention,’ which’s under development right now? Is it a real following game of ‘Counter Strike?’
It is a game that is very similar to Counter-Strike. Tactical Intervention adds a lot of new features that will bring players closer to the feeling of playing as a counter-terrorist.
Q. Nexon currently provides online service of Counter Strike. Did you ever try to play it by yourself? How do you see the game developed on your own is changing?
I have seen CS:Online and it looks great. It’s a great honor to see CS continual success in Asia. I hope people can enjoy Tactical Intervention as much as CS.
Q. Now FPS game is a popular genre of game. What do you think of the most important things in FPS game?
I value the aspect of teamplay most. In Tactical Intervention, we design the gameplay to encourage more teamplay. Players can see a very big advantage if they work as a team and it is very satisfying to see players working together. Even when a team loses, it’s exciting to see them work so hard to help each other achieve a common goal. That is something I see missing in a lot of current FPS games because they focus purely on Team Deathmatch, which, I think has very little teamplay involved.
Q. You’ve been only developing FPS game until now. Do you have interest in developing games of other genres? If so, please tell me what kind of game you want to invent.
At the moment, I have only an interest in FPS games but if I wanted to do another type of game, I would probably want to do a racing game.
Q. You will have a speech in special session at ICON2011. What will be your main topic in the presentation?
I will discuss the workflow involved in developing the content for Tactical Intervention. I hope people will learn a thing or two about content development for FPS games.
Q. How do you think open seminars for developers like ICON help inventers and game industry?
I think it is a wonderful tool for developers to connect and also to generate excitement for people who are interested in entering the game development field. When I was young, I loved to go to game conference and meet developers and it helped me become interested in developing games. I’m glad to have the opportunity to speak to people in the industry and I hope they find my presentation useful.
