Gateway One hands-on!

Gateway is not a company synonymous with innovation. The PC manufacturer has been spitting out middle-of-the-road gear for the past 5 years or so, with little apparent inspiration. While the Gateway One isn’t the most unique personal computer we’ve ever seen, it’s certainly an attractive and powerful computer with…dare we say…a certain level of cache and appeal. To get the obvious out of the way: yes, we do think this is a blatant copy of Apple’s popular iMac computer. That said, its design and general aesthetic certainly trumps any of the non-Apple all-in-one PCs that we’ve seen, Sony’s Vaio included, maybe. Suffice to say this thing looks far better in person than it does in the recently circulated promotional ads. The hardware itself is nothing to write home about, but for entry level/basic power users it should more than sufficient. Processor speed ranges from 1.5 GHz to 2.0 GHz, with a healthy 2GB to 3GB of on board memory. Not too shabby at all. It also comes bundled with a pre-paired wireless mouse and keyboard. One of the coolest aspects is the cable breakout box, which allows you to hide all of your cablery under the table, leaving a single wire coming out of the One’s rear. Expect to be able to grab one of these for between $1,300 and $1,800 depending on configuration by the end of October. As usual, more shots after the jump!
